Isabelle Maynard, originally from the south of France, presently divides her time between Toulouse, France and the bay area. Her canvases combine drawing and painting originating by her process of starting a work by drawing with her eyes closed, then working intuitively into the piece. Her process results in fresh marks, both bold and delicate, sometimes primitive, reflecting unbridled bodily movements. Influences include: Willem de Kooning, Antoni Tàpies, Pierre Soulages, and Cy Twombly, the postmodernist choreographer Trisha Brown, and German choreographer, Sacha Waltz.
