"Roots" Solo show of new paintings by Isabelle Maynard

Roots

French artist Isabelle Maynard presents a solo show, “Roots,” her fifth exhibition with 60SIX. Maynard is from Toulouse, France. She currently lives and paints in both her home in Toulouse and in Napa Valley, California.

In this body of work the artist ruminates her “roots” in place and psychological territory. She says she is investigating this space in… “it’s impotence, it’s fears, it’s land, it’s core, it’s void, it’s truth, it’s revelations, it’s passions, it’s agitations, it’s courage, it’s candor, it’s will, it’s silences.” In giving voice to one’s emotional heritage and legacy she sees herself as “Auteur de la transmission,” both storyteller and composer. The work becomes universal in that the tone vacillates between lament and celebration. Some paintings show influences of de Kooning, as abstract figures subtly emerge.

Her process is unchanged. As usual, Maynard’s use of a thin coat of plaster on the canvas enables it to hold a smooth surface for automatic and spontaneous drawing in graphite, where she then layers oils and drawing. In this work, the artist’s
palette, often white and earthy ochres, has changed to primarily black on black, and black and white.

The reception will take place at a pop up space in the mission at 245 South Van Ness Ave, #201, San Francisco, CA. Saturday September 1rst, 4-7pm. Afterward work can be viewed by appointment at 60SIX at 12 Elgin Park, SF CA. through September.
