A Different Stripe, Part 2
British musician, composer and painter Peter Whitehead, presents paintings and journals in his third solo show at 60SIX.
In this exhibition Whitehead continues his exploration of paintings constructed with diagonal, horizontal and vertical lines presented in 2016 in “A Different Stripe.”
His journals, like the collages of Kurt Schwitters, portray a daily practice of collecting and collaging the discarded detritus of daily life into meditative pages. The striped paintings offset the chaos present in the journals. In some works, the artist juxtaposes random paint splashes and chaotic marks behind orderly, structured fields of lines. Other paintings remain purely simple fields of dense stripes. The striped paintings were originally inspired by the artist’s walks observing the water reflections in the East River in New York City.
