British musician, composer and painter, Peter Whitehead, presents paintings and journals in his second solo show at 60SIX.
His paintings are constructed with diagonal, horizontal and vertical lines. Born of a musician’s sensibility, the paint transforms into harmonious sequences of dense layered stripes, and in other canvases, high pitched colors strike the canvas in open space. The series called “East River” was inspired by the lights on the river on his walks living a few blocks from the East River in New York.
The palette is highly original here. The English dictionary’s definition of “dayglow” describes it astronomically: “...the light given off by the atmosphere of the Earth as seen during daytime.” Whitehead riffs around with bright fluorescents, a difficult task to do successfully. Dayglow colors are grounded with the use of metallic silver or metallic copper creating harmonies that are smart and unexpected.
The journals portray a daily practice of collaging found materials, painting, drawing and writing. The books breath in the detritus of modern living as meditative pages, and inform both painting and experimental sound.
A short performance of Peter Whitehead’s music will end the exhibition Saturday, March 5, 2016
