Homage to homage to the square 3
“Homage to homage to the square 3” is Peter Whitehead’s eighth exhibition at 60SIX.
A composer, songwriter, instrument builder and visual artist, Peter Whitehead was born in England, and has lived and worked in Los Angeles, New York City and primarily San Francisco since 1975.
In his painting practice he has explored several series constructed from harmonious sequences of the most elemental of visual forms: circles, lines and squares. In 60SIX exhibitions “A different Stripe 1” (2016) and “A different Stripe 2,” (2017) the work took a deep dive into stripes and color. In 2023 “Homage to homage to the square” began the investigation of layered grids of painterly squares. This suite of paintings is the third show continuing the theme.
The artist’s looseness contrasts the strict parameters of the tight geometry at hand. He commands a visible freedom inside the structure by paying subtle attention to variations in hues and values of colors, variety in transitions and mark-making styles creating lines between the squares, intentionally irregular shapes of strokes...and being sensitive to countless nuances in his responses in the moment.
Whitehead listens mostly to Sun Ra while riffing on painted squares.
