Homage to homage to the square 2
Peter Whitehead continues his exploration of paintings of grids of small squares in “Homage to homage to the square 2". Joseph Albers began his famous series of small square paintings “Homage to the Square” in 1949, investigating light and optic perception through hundreds of works. Albers’ paintings were made up of simple hard edged squares within a brightly colored palette where the interplay of a few flat colors was the focus. Unlike Albers, Whitehead riffs around with soft edged painterly squares forming rhythmic passages, reflecting both his work as a composer of experimental music and his part time occupation in the craft of tile setting. For Whitehead, the choreography of the light and paint traveling together is unplanned and born of instinct in the moment.
In addition, 60SIX gallery owner Gwen Terpstra presents a few of her paintings from the series, “Nine” made of nine squares. (from 2010 to present). Both artists include work which breaks out of the grid structure where the scaffolding is obscured but visible below.
