Jürgen Trautwein

Eleven Years

Paintings from eleven shows,
with work from the collection of William Goodman and Victoria Belco.

“Eleven Years” presents paintings by Jürgen Trautwein that first appeared in his eleven previous exhibitions at Gallery 60SIX from 2013 through 2025. Featured are twelve paintings drawn from the collection of William Goodman and Victoria Belco, whose taste, dedication, and focus have long supported artists, their galleries, and the art community at large.

Born in Bruchsal, Germany, in 1958, Jürgen Trautwein is an interdisciplinary artist who works in a variety of media, including installations, land-art, sound art, animation, new media, and hypertext web-works as well as classical forms such as painting, drawing, collage, and photography. Rooted stylistically in abstract expressionism, minimalism, and conceptualism, his works are manifestations of the immediate, the everyday, and present experience.

In his painting practice, Trautwein uses planned accidents. He sometimes works on both sides of the material substrate—which might be a vintage poster, a cast-off architectural drawing, or an antique bed linen—often with unusual processes, such as crumpling or folding works or pressing leftover paint from the studio floor in additive and subtractive sequences. As a result the work appears unlabored and free of overthinking, a dance of chaos and intention, guided, says Trautwein, “only by the use of the materials and their momentary transformations.” Unexpected images sometimes emerge, reminiscent of aerial topography or landscapes. The paintings seem to breathe, demanding no more than the viewer’s contemplation.

These are paintings of transience, impermanence, and imperfection.
